azorian mountains

"These forbidding mountains circle the island of Azoria"

In is a great looking multi-levelled scenario, you'll meet centaurs and storm giants for the first time, and need to steal a key from each to escape. It won't be that easy.

The maximum points you can receive (to spend on upgrading your character) are:

    gained stormgiant key 50
    gained centaur key 50

    tactics

    spell choice
    These spells are worth considering:
  • summon centaur
  • summon dryad
  • summon eagle - the landscape is very maze like, but not for eagles
  • summon harpy or knight for key collection
  • haste
  • morph
  • heal

    vex - a liability
Daephus will cast invisibility on you. Very useful. However, Vex is useless as ever, casting scythian bow on your head. Scythian bow is classed as an attack operation, and invisibility only works when you're not attacking - so the bow firing with reveal you! How annoying.

    safe haven
From the outset, select all your party members (Vex, Daephus, and Aurax) and make them head south as quickly as possible (before a storm giant attacks). As you reach the grass at the bottom of the mountains, head east as far as you can go (marked on the map above, as 1). If you stay here, you won't be bothered by any enemies, and can plan your tactics.
This would also be a great place for the eagle eye tactic, using an eagle and two dryads.

    can you remain undetected?
Some bugs here. Even when you're morphed as a centaur, you will be spotted (yet this was a perfectly valid tactic in troll settlement earlier in the campaign - the implication is that centaurs are cleverer than trolls. If so, it explains why they will assume any creature is part of a human infiltraiton, even summoned centaurs! There's no way to remain undetected. :( Worse still, if you are morphed as a centaur, you'll be turned back into Aurax when spotted for the first time. Why?

    key positions
One key is guarded by the storm giants (2) and the other is guarded by the centaurs (3). To save yourself from danger, collect them with harpies.

    regenerating enemies
Don't expect to finish off the centaurs. You can keep killing them till the cows come home - more will continue to come.

    items worth collecting
There are 3 "summon centaur" magic items, but more usefully 3 "summon storm giant" magic items (since you won't have this access to this spell for ages). If you can finish this level without using them, you will be better equiped for later levels.

    step by step
  • move your party to the safe haven.
  • summon a harpy and collect useful items.
  • send two harpies to the storm giant key (2). Use one to distract the lord storm giant guard while the other collects the key.
  • send two harpies to the centaur key (3). Use one to distract the lord centaur guard by heading south, while the other collects the key.
  • make Aurax run for the now open portal in the west, through the land of the centaurs.
  • If the centaurs catch up, drop a creature to distract them.
