voodoo 2 problems

back to technical support index

is the voodoo 2 graphics card supported by AOM?

Despite being on the box as a 'Minimum System Requirement' the game does not appear to run on a Voodoo2 graphics card.

There has been a single report of the demo working with a Voodoo2 graphics card, although specific machine specs have not been forthcoming. However there have been numerous reports of problems with the voodoo2 card. Configurations include:

  • Voodoo2 + ATI rage
  • Voodoo2 + ATI rage pro
  • Voodoo2 + ATI rage pro II
    symptoms
The game simply will not start up. It will quit back to desktop before loading up.

    can I fix it?

    update your graphics card
Voodoo is antiquated technology, and the makers 3DFx are out of business so support is gone. Graphics cards have now been available for over 2 years, so you can now pick up more capable varieties for £30-£60.
Sure, you shouldn't have to do this for one game, but if you're serious about PC games then it's time to upgrade your Voodoo2.
Suggested alternative budget cards are anything nVidia-based e.g. TNT2, GeForce2MX, etc:

but the packaging said Voodoo2 was supported?

If you've bought the game on the strength of this claim, then you're right to feel aggrieved.

don't hold on for a patch!
Return the game, preferably unopened (though it's probably too late if you're reading this!) to the place of purchase as soon as possible. Quote the advice given on the forums about Voodoo2 not being supported as your reason for exchange.

If the stores are strict about exchange of opened software, try sending it back to the publishers, and let us know how you get on.
