'failed to start direct 3d'

A required .DLL file, D3D8.DLL, was not found.

If you're getting this error dialog, then you haven't got Microsoft DirectX 8 installed on your machine.

Do you have DirectX8 installed on your computer?

The demo WASN'T supplied with DX8. The game WAS suplied with DX8.
You can download DX8 from http://www.microsoft.com

directX8.1?

The 'failed to start Direct3D' message could be because the demo is looking for the DirectX8.1 runtime. The demo (note, not the full game) was built using this - a beta version of DX8.1 has been available to developers for some time.
